Poetry and music have long inspired and influenced visual artists. In these workshops we’ll be exploring ways we can tap into that tradition and bring our own individual experience and expression into the art.
Abstract Painting Process with the Influence of Poetry
Poetry can be directly incorporated into painting and drawing, but it can also be used to generate rhythm and pattern within a paining without showing itself explicitly as words or stanzas. Poetry can also provide a rich source of inspiration for visual artist in a variety of different ways such as thru it’s use of repetition, vivid imagery, concision, and inventiveness.
Students gain insight in how to use a variety of tools and techniques to create expressive abstract work. Learn how to combine a wide range of application techniques effectively. Color expanse, texture, mark making, layering and excavation can all contribute to the creative whole. We engage in slide lectures and discussions, technical demonstrations, exercises, and ample individual work time.
Students are responsible for their own water-based paints, medium, tools and substrates. Comprehensive supply list will be provided.
3 day workshop
June 8 - 10, 2018 (9am - 4pm)
Abstract Painting Process with the Influence of Sound
Music can provide fertile ground for the inspiration of visual artists, and it can also have a profound influence on the experience of viewing art. A painting, or really any work of art, can be more or less sensitive to this effect. In this workshop we’ll be exploring some of the factors that go into making pictures that will respond to music as well as mining music for sources of inspiration.
Students explore combinations of new materials and approaches in pattern, color, composition and fragmentation with various water- based paints and drawing media. We discover and practice many techniques of layering medium on substrates as we build and rework the surface as it responds to the influences of sound.
Through demonstrations, slide lectures and discussions students are guided to develop their own artistic vision and interpretation of the subtle yet powerful effects of sound and it’s response in the visual work.
Students are responsible for their own water-based paints, medium, tools and substrate. Compressive supply list will be provided.
